Psytrance: What Really Changes
House, techno, drum'n'bass and psytrance don't just change in speed. The philosophy of how your body has to move changes.
1. House — The Human Groove
Born: Chicago, 80s. Direct child of disco and soul. • BPM: 118-128
Drums: 4x4 with swing. Kick on every beat, clap on 2 and 4, off-beat open hi-hat and ghost notes. Feels like a real drummer.
Bass: Funky bassline, short and bouncy notes. Often a real bass sample.
Synth: Rhodes, organ, chopped vocals, strings. Warm and human.
Structure: Very predictable and delicious. 8 or 16 bars, builds up, strips everything leaving only vocal + kick.
On the floor: Hips. Two to one side, two to the other. Waist dance.
2. Techno — The Machine in Trance
Born: Detroit, 80s. Factory workers who listened to Kraftwerk. • BPM: 128-135, 140 peak
Drums: 4x4 with zero swing. Quantized, hard, metallic. Dry TR-909, long ride, almost no fills. Repetition is the trick.
Bass: Not a bassline, a drone. One note for 16 bars changing filter. Pressure, not melody.
Synth: One idea evolving for 7 minutes. Huge reverb, delay, industrial texture.
Structure: Long and hypnotic. No big drop to explode, just tension that never fully resolves.
On the floor: Head down, shoulders forward. Internal trance.
3. Drum'n'Bass — The Break
Born: UK, 90s, jungle and rave. • BPM: 170-180 (brain feels 85/90 half-time)
Drums: Chopped breakbeat. The famous Amen Break sped up and sliced. Kick and snare never where you expect.
Bass: The biggest of the four. Deep sine sub in your chest + distorted moving Reese Bass like an engine.
Synth: Atmospheric pads, stretched soul vocals, sci-fi effects.
Structure: Intro, heavy 32-bar drop, melodic break to breathe, even heavier second drop. Rollercoaster.
On the floor: Run. Jump, two quick steps, freeze on the sub.
4. Psytrance — The Rolling Conveyor
Born: Goa, late 80s. • BPM: 138-142 full-on, 125-135 prog
Drums: Kick every beat. What matters is BETWEEN kicks: K - b - b - b - K - b - b - b. Closed hi-hat non-stop. A locomotive that can't stop.
Bass: Rolling bass. Three identical notes between kicks. Propulsion, no place to rest your foot.
Synth: Psychedelic layers, acidic leads with portamento, FM, glitches, 3D effects. Never silence.
Structure: 8-10 min journey. No EDM drop, constant addition every 16 bars.
On the floor: Spin. Circular, infinite dance with no pause to clap.
